How To Make Aged Paper Flowers

So in this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to make this flower, and all this flower is basically made out of paper. And there’s all sort of beautiful dimension to it. You’ve actually got a lot of detail, and it’s really, really beautiful. It’s a stunning element to add to your card. So let me show you how to do that…

For this tutorial, I’m going to use two sheets that I’ve printed out from the Petal Patch eKit (available from Making-Handmade-Cards.com)

First, cut out three squares that get smaller and smaller. If I lay these over each other, you can see. The smallest square is 5cm x 5cm, the middle square is 7cm x 7cm and the largest is 9cm x 9cm.

Let’s start with the biggest square. We’re going to make these all into flowers. To do this we need to fold it, first in half, and then in half again. I’ll just unfold it so that I can show you what I’ve done. Now, it’s been folded into quarters. So I folded it in half, and then in half again. This time, instead of folding it in half, we’re going to fold it across the diagonal.

Now, take the center. This is the center. And we’re actually going to cut a petal shape from the center. When you unfold it, you have your first flower shape.

Let’s do the second one, which is slightly smaller. Fold it in half, and then in half again. Next, fold it diagonally, and then cut a petal shape. The smaller it gets, the thicker and harder it gets to cut, so make sure you have some really good scissors!

So, there are our two flower shapes. We’re just going to do the last one now!

Fold the square across the diagonal, then fold it across the diagonal again. Because it’s so small, we’re just going to stop at two folds. Cut a petal shape again. Carefully unfold it. There you go, that’s the center of the flower, which will go like this.

There’s different ways to attach these. You can glue the centers down and then maybe you could cut out another tiny circle from the red sheet to put in the center. Or if you have a gem, you could put a gem in the center. But I thought it would be fun to use a brad, so we’re going to do that to attach it to our card.

Next, let’s add some ink to these three flowers.

So next I’m going to show you how to add ink to kind of distress the flowers a little bit. This is an example of what I’ve done, just with plain white paper. It’s the same flower I showed you how to make here, but I’ve folded them in the middle of the petals so that the ink picks up the lines. I’m just going to show you how to do that now.

So, this is our first flower that we made - it’s the biggest one. All we need to do, is we want to make sure the crease comes up in the middle of each petal. We do that by folding it across. It doesn’t have to be folded perfectly across. And basically the reason why we want to do that, is because we want to create a ridge that the ink pad is going to catch on. So keep doing that for all of your petals.

Once you have ridges on each of the petals, grab an ink pad. I’m using the Tim Holtz (Ranger) Distress Inkpad ‘Tea Dye’, and I’m using a heat-resistant sheet. This is kind of a wipe-clean sheet so basically you can just put some ink on your sheet, and then I’m just going to move from the outside. And then, when there’s hardly any ink left on your pad, then you actually move over the ridges themselves. Ok, and then let’s pick some more ink up, and then move from the outside of your mat into your petal.

And so here you can see now, it looks just a little bit more weathered. We’re going to do this for all the other petals. Obviously this white one has already been done. Let’s do it for the smaller red one.

So first of all, we need to create the ridges. So make sure you fold those petals in the center, to create a nice ridge in the center. I mean if you don’t want ridges, if you don’t want the ink pad to pick up the ridge, then just don’t make any ridges. I just kind of like that effect.

Ok, so there we go. Let’s just add a little bit more ink to the mat. I just like this mat because it’s wipe-clean. So once you’ve finished, you can wipe it and it’s all gone. This tool that I’m using, is called an ink blending tool and it’s basically for the application and blending of inks. And basically you can undo this part so that you can add different foam pads according to the color you use. Ok, so I’m just picking up some of this ink here, and I’m going to move from the sheet to the edge of the petal. When I’ve got hardly any ink left, I’m going to wipe the applicator over the ridges to pick up those ridges.

This part really is dark, so I’m just going to get a darker ink pad. This one is Distress Inkpad ‘Vintage Photo’ by Tim Holtz (Ranger) and I’m just going to see if this makes any difference. Oh yeah, it does, look. It’s definitely making a difference on here because the other one was slightly too light. That darker ink - the Vintage Photo inkpad - really has kind of added more definition. So that’s our second flower. We’ve got this one and this one. We just need to do this one now.

Again, before we start we just need to create some ridges. So let’s just fold in the center of each petal. Make sure there’s a good, crisp crease because that’s what the ink is going to catch on. If it’s not crisp enough, it’s not going to catch on anything really. It’s just going to be a big smudge. And then wipe the ink applicator on and move from the outside edge in. And there, can you see the ink’s starting to run out. So now I know I can just smudge it over the creases.

So now we have our large flower that’s been distressed, our white flower and our red flower and our tiny flower here. And there we go, look how pretty that is. And you’ve made your own flower.

Because everything’s folded, you can give it some depth. You can see there, look. You can really push the petals up, or you can curl them, you can curl each petal, you can do all sorts of things. But let’s attach these flowers to a card so you can see them in action.

So here’s my card blank - it’s a square card blank. And I’ve cut out a piece from the red-ish green Petal Patch sheet. I’m just going to stick it to the front of the card. I’m going to use some dry adhesive.

Next, let’s ‘age’ the card…

I’m just going to add some ink that we used for the flowers and I’m going to move in from the mat. Start with the corners. When you find there’s not so much ink on your pad, do the edges. So there you go, that looks just a little bit more aged around the edges.

Next, I’m just going to add a little bit of contrast by adding two strips from the green Petal Patch paper, which is this one. And I’m going to put them in an ‘L’ shape here. So just add some dry adhesive to the back of the strips.

Finally, we’re going to add our flower. We’re going to make it by attaching this brown brad through the center of each of the flowers we made, to make a full flower effect. So what I’m going to do, is cut a very small cross in the center of each flower. Starting with the one that comes closest to the edge of the brad first - that’s going to be the smallest one - pop that through the slit. Then we want the next one, which is the red one - pop that through the slit too. Then take the third one - that’s the white paper - and pop that through the slit. Do the same for the last one.

Finally, let’s attach the flower to the card. I’ve just poked a little hole through the card here, and all you need to do is poke the brad through the hole like that. Fix it on the other side by just flattening the edges of the brad. Just fluff up the petals to give it a bit of dimension and there you have it - a beautiful card. There’s a flower on it - it’s not made of silk, you made it yourself and it’s absolutely stunning.

    Claire,

You’ve really got some great ideas and I love watching your tutorials. I’ve done the same thing on my cards, but instead of ink, I use glitter glue along the edges and tips of the petals using a paint brush for more precise coverage. I also brushed a bit of glitter glue on the center brad.

Please keep your tutorials coming! They inspire me to do many things I might never have thought of on my own!

    Sincerely, Merilee

What a wonderful way to make flowers, they are expensive to buy! I thought when I first saw them that you had used punches to make the petals - cutting them out yourself can give you a variety of sizes.

  17. Claire from Making-Handmade-Cards.com Says:

Thanks so much everyone for your encouraging comments. I’m working on another video tutorial for you, and I’ll be releasing that soon too (to subscribers of the newsletter).

Frances - if you scroll down to the video transcript, you can see exactly which color ink pads I used. The ink pads are in the Tim Holtz (Ranger) distressed ink pads range, and the tool I used to blend the corners and edges is called a ‘blending tool’ also by Ranger. Off the top of my head I think the ink pads were Tea Stain and Vintage Photo. :0)

    Hope this helps Frances!

hi,i am always up for new ideas, the video explained every little details on how to make these stunning flowers,i would say the one thing l would change is that i would put the brad through the flower like you said, but rather than make a hole in the card that you attashed the flower to,i would put double sided tape on the back of the flower, over the brad and stick the flower on to the card, leaves no hole in the card, thats just my idea, can’t wait to try this out,my step son who is 11 loves card making and i know he will love doing this flower.keep up the good work.

  267. Judith Says:

    Dear Claire,
You are such a blessing by being willing to share your gift. I make lots of cards and am so greatful for your ideas for embellishing them.
I grabbed some scraps of paper to practice making this beautiful flower. My cutting was a little off, but with a few more tries it should be good enough to apply to a card.

Thanks so much. and to Louise with the 87yr old hands, you made me smile because you are able to use your beautiful aged hands. Just think of the ones whose hands are crippled with “Arthur”, and they do well to even dress themselves, let alone holding paper to make cards.

  268. kirsty Says:

thank you for all the tutorials they are great, they’ve given me so many new ideas. x

I am so glad to have this video back. I had it when I belonged before, and then my computer crashed and I lost it. I love making these flowers, but always have to go back to the video to remember how to do it. Now that I have it again, I’ll be more inclined to make cards again as it’s one of my favorite techniques.

  272. Charlene Says:

Thank you for this turirial. The steps are easy to follow, and I just love the finished product - both the flower and the card.

  273. Pat Powell Says:

    Hi

Thank you - great to be able to make flowers - large as you like - without buying the expensive punches. With regard to the distressing, may also be good to use circular motion with the ink pad and gradually work from the work sheet onto the edges of the petal. Didn’t like the centre creases to be too dark. Anyway, thanks again. Pat

  274. Dianna M., Shawnee, OK Says:

    Claire,
You give us such creative ideas and these videos are very professional and the instructions easy to follow. The only suggestion I have on this one is to attached the flower to you card cover paper first, so the brad doesn’t protrude on the inside of the card. I believe once you’ve done that and adhere the cover paper to the card; you shouldn’t “lose” the flower.

Thanks again for all the free ideas. You do make card making on a budget possible.

Love it! I am not a flower fan for all cards. This allows you to customize and not worry if you don’t have a color that goes with your design. You’ll ALWAYS have a color that will work with your card.

Hi Claire, as a pensioner I really appreciate the free advice and tutorials as card making items are very expensive here. I dont have inks, so tried my water colour pencils instead. OK with not quite the same effects but interesting results nevertheless. Enjoy listening to your accent and ideas. Thank you

  295. Patti McBride Says:

Wow! What a sweet idea. Now I have a question for you.
Where do I find an ink printing tool, or better still, I’d like to
make one. Where do I get the foam for the block & handle?
Are they replaceable (such as the use of velcro)? How do you
clean the ink off the sponge, & is it reusable? Thanks for the
tips for these inexpensive flowers. Have a great day!

    Patti Mc :-)
